A Weekend Getaway

Recently I decided to take a weekend vacation to Gisenyi. Gisenyi is a small fishing town located in the Northwest of Rwanda. I went with one of my friends and long term volunteers in the Village, Barrett.
The trip was amazing! We went to a cute hotel called the Paradise. While at the hotel we stayed in a bungalow and sat under orange trees. The outdoor hotel was covered in flowers and beautiful greenery. The hotel is situated along Lake Kivu, one of the six largest lakes in Africa. Along the water is a beach and from the beach you can see a small island that the hotel owns. Not to mention the food! The best food that i've had since i've gotten to Rwanda. Every meal we enjoyed tilapia, mashed potatoes, green beans and carrots. And we had liters full of coffee and hot chocolate. Breathtaking and relaxing? I think so!
The funniest part of our vacation was when we got into a small wooden canoe to venture over to the island. Prior to getting into the canoe, the Manager of the hotel alerted us that the boat may have holes in it but that the staff person was working on fixing it. After the staff person was done, we loaded the canoe. At that very moment, we knew we wouldn't make it. Every breath that we took and word that we spoke made the canoe rock back and forth. As we attempted to paddle, all of the Paradise's staff people came out to see the silly Westerners about to get overturned. Immediately the Manager demanded that we return so we could find a strong boat. Quite amusing I must say!
Overall, the vacation was incredible. It was great to take some time to relax, read, write, play games and enjoy delicious food. Enjoy the pictures!
Our bungalow.
The beach.
Barrett and I on our rickety wooden canoe.
Wooden silverware. I felt like I was in the Flinstones.
Sambaza! Fried baby fish from Lake Kivu.
Wine and cheese with homemade challah.
Local Rwandans on canoes. Some more modern and sturdy than  others.
